Obituary for Virginia Lorraine Pike (Nuffer)
MASSENA – Mrs. Virginia Lorraine (Nuffer) Pike, 95, a resident of the St. Regis Nursing Home, peacefully passed away Monday morning, October 9, 2017 with her loving family by her side.
Virginia was born November 29, 1921 in Beaver Falls, New York, the daughter of the late Llewellyn “Bud” and Nellie (Manzer) Nuffer. She was a 1939 graduate of Beaver River Central School and a 1942 graduate of the Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. On April 26, 1942, she married Dr. John Benton Pike in Auburn, New York. He predeceased her on January 21, 1993.
Virginia dedicated her life to raising her six daughters and assisted her husband with his medical practice as needed. As a Registered Nurse, she volunteered countless hours to the American Red Cross during local blood drives. She was a longtime member of the Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ. As a flower lover and gardener, she was active with Massena Garden Club and enjoyed playing bridge with the Massena Bridge Club. Virginia also had a great love for music, especially playing the piano and singing.
Virginia also treasured entertaining for her family and friends and baking and cooking for them. Of all her enjoyments, she cherished the time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at her home or at the family camp on Lake Champlain.
Virginia is survived by her six daughters, Jeanette Mayo of St. Johnsbury, Vermont; Mary Jane Schremp and her husband, John of Hudson, Ohio; Valerie Dunning and her husband, William of Moira; Patricia Ryan and her husband, Robert of Beaver Falls; Virginia Sullivan and her husband, Thomas of Massena; and Vanessa Denning and her husband, D. Seth of Delmar. She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren, Erin (Mayo) Gurnis, Darcy (Mayo) Dugas, Caitlin (Schremp) Bowdish, Keely (Dunning) Flint, Joshua Dunning, Lindsey Ryan, Mary Elizbeth (Ryan) Tucker, Benton and Emily Sullivan, and Leigh and Evan Denning; and seven great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Shirley Martin; her brother, Charles Nuffer; and a son-in-law, Bernier Mayo.
Friends may call at the Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, West Orvis Street, Massena, on Thursday, October 12th from 1:30 until 3:00 PM, when her funeral service will commence with Pastor Judy VanKennan, officiating. Burial will be held privately in Evergreen Cemetery, Canton.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Massena Memorial Hospital or the St. Regis Nursing Home.
