Laura "Molay" McDonald
AKWESASNE – Mrs. Laura C. “Molay” McDonald, 59, of 505 Wade LaFrance Memorial Road, Snye, unexpectedly passed away Cornwall Community Hospital on Tuesday evening, December 19, 2017 after a brief illness.
Molay was born July 24, 1958 in Cornwall, the daughter of the Elizabeth “Betty” (LaFrance) Sunday and the late Joseph L. “Jiggy” Sunday. She attended schools in Snye and Cornwall and later achieved her GED through the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. On December 9, 1978, she married Daniel Alex McDonald at the Hogansburg Methodist Church.
For the past 16 years, Molay was the Museum Curator at the Akwesasne Cultural Center. She was a communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church and the Akwesasne Death Benefits Group. She enjoyed playing softball, bowling, watching her children’s sports, NASCAR and watching the Kentucky Derby. She also took great pride in beading and making baskets. She cherished the memories she made floating down the river and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Molay is survived by her husband, Alex; her children, Louie John, Leigh Ann and Steve, Danielle and Francis; a chosen daughter, Andrea; her grandchildren, Brendan, Loveday, Jayleigh, Tatum, Louie Jr., Lorra, and SJ; and her godchildren, Morgan “Kawi” Travis, Amber, Kady.
She is also survived by her mother, Betty; her sisters, Deirdre and Joe and Jamie and Dicki; her brothers, Raymond, Timmy and Charlene, Steve and Anna, Patrick, William and Wendy, Cory and Sammi, and Charlie; her husband’s family, Sheila and Glenn Hill and Betty and Alex Roundpoint, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In addition to her father, Molay was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Kyleigh and Tyrone “Raweras”; a sister, Tricia Sunday; her brothers, Thomas and Carl “Bonzo” Sunday; her nephew, Cody Sunday; and her beloved in-laws, Daniel and Loveday McDonald.
Friends may call at the Akwesasne Homemakers starting Thursday (today) 8:00 PM until 9:00 AM Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 10:30 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating. Burial will be held privately.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.
