Olive Christine Bell

PLATTSBURGH – Mrs. Olive Christine Bell, 97, a longtime resident of Johnson Ave, peacefully passed away Wednesday evening, March 7, 2018 at the Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital Long Term Care Unit (SNF).

Olive was born on February 6, 1921 at the family home at Geers Corners in the Town of Pitcairn, New York, the daughter of the late Wilbur J. and Olive A.E. (Siver) Bacon. She attended the one room schoolhouse in Geers Corners, before going to Harrisville High School, where she graduated at the age 16. On May 30, 1951, she married Homer Leon Bell at the Assumption of Mary Church in Redford. He predeceased her on November 15, 1989.

Before her marriage, she worked at Walt’s Restaurant in Harrisville, at the paper mill in Watertown, and at Faychney Instrument Corps. After moving to the Plattsburgh and Redford area, she worked for a time at JC Penney before she and her husband began operating the General Store in Redford and the Weathercock Restaurant and Bar in Chazy. She later went to work at the Plattsburgh Public Library, where she was a clerk until her retirement in 1977. She was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Plattsburgh and enjoyed sewing, reading, working in her gardens, and taking care of her grandchildren.

Olive is survived by her children and their spouses, Roland and Coral Bell of Kennington, Maryland; Howard Paul and Deborah Bell of Peru; Marie and Patrick King of Saratoga Springs; Marjorie Dupee of Portland, Oregon; and Anne Bell of Plattsburgh; her grandchildren, Rachel, Megan, Hilary, Heather, Kevin, Robert, and Nicole; 12 great grandchildren; her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Carl Seymour of Potsdam; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters,
Carol Bacon, Marjorie E. Davison, Dorothea B. Waugh, and Gladys H. Brierton; and four brothers, Theodore R., Jesse A., Paul M., and Clyde W.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Victory Church, Plattsburgh with Rev. William Reamer, celebrating. The family will greet friends and family beginning at 10:00 AM at the church. Burial will be held in the spring at Assumption of Mary Cemetery in Redford.
