Maureen  Lazore

CORNWALL, ON- Maureen Catherine Lazore, 56, of Cornwall Island Ontario, peacefully passed away Thursday night, June 7, 2018 at the Tsiionkwanonhso:te Nursing Home on Cornwall Island.

Maureen was born on July 12, 1961, in Malone, NY, daughter of Mary Madeline Lazore. She graduated from General Vanier School in 1987 and Dan Jay Computer School in Brantford, ON in 2002. She earned her Arts and Science Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Part Early Child Education from St. Lawrence College in 2009, and her Bachelor’s in Social and Criminal Justice in 2015, and her Master of Science in Criminal Justice currently from Ashford University.

She is survived by her daughter Rachelle Margaret Lazore of Cornwall; her mother Mary Madeline Lazore of Cornwall Island; Janet Herne who was like a second mother; sister, Kateri Tewennate Lazore of Akwesasne; God-sister Kathleen Herne of Akwesasne; her brother Joseph Lazore of Akwesasne; god-brothers, Raymond (Cece) Herne of Akwesasne; Wilbur (Alice) Herne of Akwesasne; Arthur Herne of Akwesasne; her sister-in-law’s, Pearl and Jane Standing; her brother-in-law’s, Jim and Albert Standing; and her aunts and uncles, Christie Roundpoint and Delia and Junior Cook.

She is also survived by her nieces Ieionkwahawi, Lily, Justin, Kaitlyn, Amanda, and Arianna Thompson; Her nephews, Dakota Lazore, Isaiah, Jake, Thompson, Abe and Louie Francis and her godmother, Mary Herne.

She was predeceased by her grandmother, Catherine Lazore on July 10, 1987; and her loving companion and best friend, Richard Standing in March 2016; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She also loved her river main coon cats, Mittens and Tiger; and Curious who predeceased her in 2014, they were her companions and like her children.

She enjoyed spending time with her daughter and her companion when he was alive, and having long conversations. She enjoyed working on crafts, reading books, going to pow wow’s and movies, and was known as the Dream Catcher Girl. Maureen loved spending time with her nieces and nephews, family, and friends and enjoying good conversation and talking about the past and present.

Maureen had a good heart and always wore her heart on her sleeve. She took a person at face value and accepted them for whom they were. She touched many people's hearts and lives and made a difference every day.

She had many talents in different areas, such as beadwork, knitting and making blankets. Her greatest joy was having her dreamcatchers go all over the world as she has done for over 20 years. She loved making Christmas gifts, and everyone enjoyed them. She always made them special for each person. She was also a strong advocate for protecting the wild Mustangs and Kiger Mustangs.

Friends may call at the Akwesasne Homemakers in Snye, Beginning Monday at 4:00 PM until Tuesday morning, when a funeral service will be held at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse, at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Solomon Road Cemetery.
