Obituary for John Belanger

John Belanger

MASSENA- After a brief illness, John P. Belanger, 87, of 309 Trippany Road, died Sunday afternoon, September 23, 2018, at his home where he was under the loving care of his wife, son and Hospice.

John was born December 28, 1930, in Massena, son of the late Solomon and Antoinette LaDue Belanger. He graduated from Massena High School in 1951, where he played both basketball and football. On November 22, 1952, he married Marjorie Benedict at the St. Regis Catholic Church.

John started his working career in 1950 when he worked for a time at Woody Smith’s Grocery Store. He later went to work for a time at Alcoa before going to work on the Missile Base Construction in Plattsburgh. He returned back to Massena, where he was a car salesman at Massena Auto Exchange before starting with North Country Dodge. He continued there for many years until he bought out Theodore Samets and changed the name of the dealership to J&R Dodge Ltd. He remained the owner until his retirement in 1993. John was very active within his community as a member of the Elks Club #1702, serving as a Past Exalted Ruler and Past District Deputy of the North Central District. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a Scoutmaster of Cub Scouts Pack #31 and was a recipient holder of Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. He was past President of the Eskimo Traveling Trailer Club and served on the Town of Massena Planning Board for 25 years. John was also a lector at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. John loved camping, travelling many miles throughout the U.S.A with his wife. They retired to Bradenton, FL for many years and in 1994, they returned to live in Massena with their son.

John is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Benedict) Belanger and his son, Raymond, and his granddog, Brandi, along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by two sisters, Sally Ratowski; and Rolanda Cutler; and one brother, Raymond J. Belanger.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held privately at the convenience of the family at Calvary Cemetery.
