Obituary for Ross Kenney

Ross Kenney
Ross was born February 16, 1934 in Watertown, the son of the late Ross W. and Gladys (Koproski) Kenney. He was a graduate of Watertown High School and later from Canton ATI, where he was a member of the Zeta Alpha Phi Fraternity. On August 14, 1953, he entered the US Navy, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge on August 5, 1955. After discharge, he returned to Watertown where he met his future wife, Shirley E. Rogers of Brasher, at a Valentine’s Dance. They married on June 15, 1957 at St. Patrick’s Church in Brasher with Rev. Zimmerman, officiating and returned to Massena.

Ross first worked at Reynolds Metals for 11 ½ years before starting a career with US Customs, where he was an inspector retiring after 25 years of service and was very involved in starting the US Customs Union. He was communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Lawrence Council #1141, where he served as Scholarship Chairman, and was actively involved with the annual toy drive. He was also a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the St. Joseph’s School Board. Ross was very active with Massena Minor Hockey coaching for over 30 years, played on the Reynolds golf team, and was a pitcher for many ball teams, and recorded the first and only no-hitter in Canton ATI’s history for many years. He also enjoyed skiing and photography, and was a huge New York Ranger’s fan.

Ross is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley; his six children, Michael Kenney; Mary McDowell of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Margaret and Marcel Vincent of Cornwall, Ontario; Lawrence and Shelley Kenney of El Paso, Texas; Patrick Kenney of Georgia; and Jim and Carrie Kenney of Massena; and a daughter-in-law, Kenda Kenney of Syracuse; 18 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and his nephew John Searles.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Searles and a brother, Arthur Kenney.

Friends may call Thursday 9:30-11:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the National Alzheimer Center.
