Obituary for Dorothy M Madden (Moore)

MASSENA – Mrs. Dorothy M. Madden, 98, a longtime resident of Nightengale Avenue, peacefully passed away Friday afternoon, October 19, 2018 at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus.

Dorothy was born in Akron, OH, on January 25, 1920, the daughter of William C. and Claire Anne (Lotz) Moore. She grew up in the greater Buffalo area, and earned her bachelor's degree in social studies from Buffalo State College in 1939. After teaching at Alfred-Almond Central School, she returned to college, earning a master's degree in social studies in 1943.

Dorothy began teaching social studies at Massena Central High School in 1943. She was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and a Red Cross volunteer. On July 25, 1945, she married Willard F. Madden in Syracuse, NY. She continued teaching full-time until 1947, when she took a break to raise her family.

While she was busy with her family, Dorothy substitute taught high school history. She was active in the Emmanuel Congregational Church, as well as the Girl Scouts, Massena Garden Club, Massena Women's College Club, and Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, of which she was a founding member.

Dorothy returned to teaching at Massena Central from 1970 until 1984, when she and Willard retired. They spent time traveling and enjoying their grandchildren. After Willard passed away in 1986, Dorothy continued to travel: she visited all fifty states, most of Europe, and parts of Central America. She saw the Midnight Sun, visited the ruins of Pompeii, and sailed through the Panama Canal. She continued to volunteer for Meals on Wheels and MMH Auxiliary. She loved opera and bridge, and was a voracious reader.

Dorothy is survived by her four daughters and their spouses, Alison and Kerrith Chapman of Potsdam; Laurel Goolden and David Sharpe of Winthrop; Claudia Newbury of Las Vegas, NV; and Prudence and Stephen Younger of New York, New York; her beloved grandchildren, Michelle Glenfield, William Miller, Megan Goolden, Travis Madden, Virginia Aaron, George Newbury, Millicent Bender, and William, Coleman, and Emery Younger; and 6 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Willard William Madden in 1997.

At her request, there will be no services. Her cremated remains will be buried in the spring in Bellefontaine, Ohio at the convenience of her family.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Massena Meals on Wheels, Massena Public Library, or the American Heart Association.

'The old order changeth, yielding place to new, And God fulfils himself in many ways...
But now farewell. I am going a long way .. To the island-valley of Avilion; Where falls not hail, or rain, or any snow, Nor ever wind blows loudly; but it lies Deep-meadowed, happy, fair with orchard lawns And bowery hollows crowned with summer sea."
