Obituary for Catherine E. Beadle (Boorman)

MASSENA – Mrs. Catherine Edna (Boorman) Beadle, 93, of Sherwood Drive passed away Wednesday evening, November 28, 2018 at the St. Regis Nursing Home.

Catherine, or “Kay” to friends and family, was born in Norfolk, New York on January 26, 1925 to Francis and Sara Tucker Boorman. Their only daughter, Kay was a beloved sister to Robert (Bob), Maynard, Mayo (Bill) Boorman. Kay graduated from Norfolk High School and in 1947 martriculated from Potsdam State with a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education. While at Potsdam, she participated in a pilot Music Sequence program to teach elementary school music; however, when offered a job in Clarksville, NY to teach music, she quickly realized she did not “have the ear.” As much as she loved the arts, she found her career passion to elementary education-specifically, fourth grade. She spent her first years in the classroom in Delmar, NY, where she met the love of her life: Herbert O. Beadle. If you were fortunate to socialize with the Beadles at their home on Sherwood Drive, Massena, you would have heard on the stereo all the big band, swing, classical, and other hits of the mid-twentieth century that Kay and Herb spent countless hours dancing to during their courtship. They moved back to the North Country, married on July 9, 1949, and built a happy life together in Massena for 60 years. Kay taught fourth grade in the Massena Central School District and took sabbatical to obtain her Masters in Art History at Potsdam State. Kay prided herself on preparing her students for success in the higher grades, including exposure to the arts. In 1981, after 32 years, she retired to pursue other interests more fully with lifelong friends, including traveling, golfing, cross-country skiing, boating all around the northern waterways, playing bridge, and wintering in Lake Havasu, AZ. Kay was a quick wit who enjoyed telling her “stories,” clever jokes with intelligent punch lines. She was ever gracious and took a sincere interest in others.

Kay is survived by her nephew and wife, Harold and Deborah Borrman, Cheboygan, MI; her niece and husband, Sara Elizabeth and Joseph Bunce, Scottsdale, AZ; her goddaughter and husband, Sarah Catherine Klein and JP Fortin, Manassas, VA; Sarah’s daughter and Kay’s namesake, Catherine Glidden; her godson and wife, Adam and Kelley Klein, Atlanta, GA; neighbors Chuck and Patty Raiti, Massena, NY; and her lifelong friend, Gail Whitcomb, Massena, NY.

In addition to her parents, Kay was predeceased by her husband, Herb on June 21, 2010; and her brothers.

Family and friends are grateful to her devoted caregivers and the St. Regis Nursing Home for the excellent care she received. There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be in Spring 2019 at Bixby Cemetery at the convenience of the survivors.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to a charity of one’s choice.
