AKWESASNE – Harriet Nikawenna:’a Akat Boots, 74, former Bear Clan Mother at the Kanienkeh’aka Kaiennare’kowa Kanonhsesne, passed away surrounded by her family and friends on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at her home on Cornwall Island.

Akat was born May 30, 1944, the daughter of the late Frank Foote and Teresa George Daley and was raised by Andrew and Margaret George. Akat served with honor for the people as a Bear Clan mother for 47 years, she was one of the original Mohawk teachers of the Akwesasne Freedom School and loved sharing traditional teachings and the Mohawk language. Akat fought for our people’s rights and was known to be at the front lines during many protests and gatherings.
Her favorite activities were playing bingo, fishing on the river, making crafts, and joking around with the family and friends. Family members will always remember her laughter, cheering for lacrosse and baseball games, and playing tricks on each other. Her love for family members will remain strong in her heart.
Akat is survived by her huband, John, who she married on October 17, 1964; her children, Andrea, Cindy (Lyle Lazore), Caroline (Richard Laffin), Paul (Diane), and Stacey (Yolanda Hill); and her chosen daughter, Rosalie Herne. Akat is a proud grandmother of 21 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Akat is also survived by her brother, Pat Daley and special nieces, Michelle, Debbie, and Jessica; a special nephew, Butch; her godson, Chip George; special friends, Veronica Thompson and Joyce Ransom, and many additional nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Akat was predeceased by her brother, Richard Lee Foote and a sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Gerald Simmons.
Friends may call at the Kanienkeh’aka Kaiennare’kowa Kanonhsesne in Akwesasne starting Monday 5:00 PM until her funeral service on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Jock Road Cemetery.
