Obituary

AKWESASNE – Harriet Nikawenna:’a Akat Boots, 74, former Bear Clan Mother at the Kanienkeh’aka Kaiennare’kowa Kanonhsesne, passed away surrounded by her family and friends on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at her home on Cornwall Island.

Akat was born May 30, 1944, the daughter of the late Frank Foote and Teresa George Daley and was raised by Andrew and Margaret George. Akat served with honor for the people as a Bear Clan mother for 47 years, she was one of the original Mohawk teachers of the Akwesasne Freedom School and loved sharing traditional teachings and the Mohawk language. Her favorite activities were playing bingo, fishing on the river, making crafts, and joking around with the family and friends. Family members will always remember her laughter, cheering for lacrosse and baseball games, and playing tricks on each other. Her love for family members will remain strong in her heart.

Akat is survived by her huband, John, who she married on October 17, 1964; her children, Andrea, Cindy (Lyle Lazore), Caroline (Richard Laffin), Paul (Diane), and Stacey (Yolanda Hill); and her chosen daughter, Rosalie Herne. Akat is a proud grandmother of 21 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

We are so sorry for your loss. When this happens in our family we need more than human strength. God and his Son can provide what we need. Please review these scriptures : John 5:28-29 “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.” Revelation 21:4 “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
