WEST STOCKHOLM – Marie T. “Mert” Baxter, 86, of Heath Road, passed away Monday morning, January 14, 2019 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown from complications of a vehicle accident on November 1st.

Marie was born August 16, 1932 in Potsdam, the daughter of the late Charles and Lillian (Magnan) McGowan. She was a graduate of Massena High School. On October 15, 1951, she married Roy Page, the marriage later ended in divorce. In September 1973, she married Lawrence E. Baxter, he predeceased her in September 2001.

Marie worked for a time at Neisner’s and later worked at P&C Foods for many years. She was also an Ombudsman for the Canton Area, a member of the local Red Hatters, and a local representative for AARP. She had a great passion for camping, traveling and music. She also enjoyed crafting – especially making pine cone trees and was well known for her lemon meringue pies.

Marie is survived by her children, Jimmy Page of Sanfordville; Thomas and Kathy Page of Pennsylvania; and Patty and Jeff Hunter of West Stockholm; grandchildren, Kristy Jo (Michael), Jill (Larry), Lisa (Claude), Megan, and Jessica(Tommy), several great grandchildren; brother, Norman and Ellen McGowan of Syracuse; her longtime companion, Albert “Andy” Anderson of Potsdam; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Carol Rogers and Diane Rutley and her brothers, William McGowan.

Friends may call Tuesday 3-6:00 PM at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, where her funeral service will be held at 6:00 PM with Pastor Brooke Newell, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider memorial contributions to Potsdam Rescue Squad or the West Stockholm Fire Department First Responders.

Patty and family so sorry for the loss of your mom. She was always pleasant at the stores she worked. I did not realize she was your mom.

Marie was such a lovely, caring & funny lady. She treated me like a granddaughter. I have such fond memories of overnights in St. Regis Falls. My heartfelt sympathy is with Patty, Jill, Jessica and family.

I'm so sorry to hear the loss of Mrs.Marie Baxter. its very painful to loss someone we dearly love in death. I wish and hope the words found at Acts 24:15 ("And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.") give you some measure of peace and comfort in this difficult time.
