MASSENA – Wanda May Robertson, 92, of County Route 37, peacefully passed away early Friday morning, January 25, 2019 at her home after a brief illness.

Wanda was born May 5, 1926 in Massena, the daughter of the late Cecil and Winona M. (Burton) McConnell. She was a 1944 graduate of Massena High School. On October 27, 1944, she married George S. Robertson at the Massena First Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Hotelling, officiating. George predeceased her on February 28, 2007.

As a young woman, she worked at MH Fishmans, Becker’s Modern Style, and Alcoa for a brief time. After her marriage, she worked at the A&P, the New York State Unemployment Office, and was a cashier at ACME Markets. Wanda was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Massena Senior Citizens and a lifelong member of the Rebekkah Lodge. Wanda and her late husband had a great love for dancing, especially square dancing and was a member of the Seaway Squares. She enjoyed playing cards, shuffleboard, visiting the casino, traveling with the senior citizens. She also enjoyed wintering in Lady Lake, Florida for over 10 years.

Wanda is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Gene Ackerman of Massena; her son and his partner, Alan S. Robertson and Linda Perkins of Louisville; her grandchildren, Daniel, Scott, Derek, Trevor, Matthew, Kate, and Justin; her step-grandchildren, Adelle and Nathaniel; 5 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; her brother, Carl McConnell of Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Wanda was predeceased by her daughter, Dawn R. Brown on October 3, 2001; her son-in-law, Ray Brown on April 9, 2018; and her sister Vada Strader in 2003.

Friends may call Monday 4-7:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral service will be held Tuesday 10:00 AM with Pastor Rachael Jordan, officiating. Burial will be held privately in the spring in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.

I’m so sorry for the loss of this woman. My condolences go out to the Robertson family. There’s a Scripture that always comforted me when I lost someone close to me in death. It’s in Revelation 21:4 which says: “And he [God] will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” This is a promise from God that he will end death forever in the future and that we will see our loved ones again!

Gene and Bonnie..just heard about Wanda’s passing...she was a wonderful lady! Enjoyed working at Acme Markets with her..she taught me the ropes as a cashier. I can just imagine her and my mother-in-law, Loretta Lazore, reminiscing up in their new home! Prayers to all of your family. Cheeta Lazore-Dietlein

Like many other neighbors, I used to see Wanda riding her bicycle down our country roads. She loved to wave at everyone as she passed and so I felt I knew her well. So when she turned up year after year at the polling place in Helena, checking in all the voters, I felt reunited again, as with an old friend. Wanda is already missed - her sweet personality and warm smile are the two things I will always remember.
