Obituary

PARISHVILLE – Wayne Thomas “Tommy” Matthews, 74, of State Highway 72, peacefully passed away Friday, March 1st, 2019, in the comfort of his home, with his loving family by his side.

Tommy was born October 28, 1944 in Potsdam, the son of the late Donald L. Sr. and Ileen V. (Bovay) Matthews. He first attended Parishville-Hopkinton Schools before graduating from Potsdam High School. He entered the US Navy on June 15, 1965, proudly serving his country on the USS Everglades. He was honorably discharged on June 18, 1969. On June 29, 1969 he married Sharon A. Kyer in Potsdam.

Tommy worked and lived for many years in Rochester, before returning back to Parishville where he worked for the Town of Parishville at the transfer station. He was a member of the Parishville AMVETS Post #265 and was active with the Parishville Museum. Tommy was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching football. He also enjoyed hunting, tinkering around, building and fixing things. What Tommy cherished the most was the time he was able to spend with his family.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Sharon; his children and their spouses, Theresa and Jeff Decormier of Laconia, NH; Derek Matthews of Rochester, NY; Melissa and Bill Schneider of Hilton, NY; Jeffrey and Elena Matthews of Irondequoit; and Brenda Matthews and her fiancé, Dean Lucas of Webster, NY; his grandchildren, Christina, Kayleigh, Kesha, Aimeé, Brant, Jaedan, Logan, Zachary, Cole, and Stella; and his great grandchildren, Evan, Hayleigh, Addalyn, Brooklynn, Patrick, Grayson, Keira, and Nicholas Jr.

He is also survived by his brothers, Edward John “Butch” (Cynthia) Matthews of Rochester, NY; Joseph C. Matthews of Potsdam, NY; and sister in law Sandra James Matthews of Rochester, NY. As well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Donald Jr. “Peanut” Matthews, and Alan Richard “Dick” Matthews.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 30th from 1-4 pm at the Parishville AMVETS,
5 Catherine Street, Parishvillle, 13672.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parishville AMVETS.
