AKWESASNE – Carl J. Smoke, 77, of 332 Wade LaFrance Road, Snye, passed away early Monday morning, April 1, 2019 at IAK HIH SOH THA Lodge with his loving family by his side.

Carl was born November 17, 1941 in Akwesasne, the son of the late Philip and Anna (Arquette) Smoke. He attended St. Regis Mohawk and Salmon River Central School. On October 22, 1966, he married Vivian M. Lazore at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Francis Arsenault, officiating.
Carl was first a sheet metal and ironworker before becoming a police officer with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police. After leaving Tribal Police, he continued in law enforcement as a dispatcher for the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service until his retirement. Throughout his life he has had a great love for sports, playing softball for the Snye Bums, basketball, and golfing were just some that he enjoyed. He also enjoyed stock car racing, playing cards and watching his grandchildren play sports.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian; his children, Derek J. Smoke (Evelyn Powless) of Onondaga Nation; Wayne M. Smoke of Snye, and Courtney (Dwayne) Thomas of Snye; his grandchildren, Kyla, Morgan, Trey, Chad, Kaylee, Zack, Turner, Ethan, Gabrielle, Dayne, Lloyd, Paul, and Cecilia; a chosen daughter, Colleen Nolan; chosen sons, Christopher and Jake Lazore; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Peter, Philip Jr., and Sherman Smoke and his sisters, Margaret White, Hattie Nelson, Mary Woodman, and Ruth Smoke.
Friends may call starting 12:00 NOON on Thursday at his home, where funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 PM with Rev. Jerome Pastores, officiating.
