POTSDAM - On June 17, 2019, we lost a great husband, Dad, Grandpa, and friend. William L Nichols Jr, Bill to all his friends and family, passed away at Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse, NY from complications after surgery.

Bill was born on February 23, 1948 in Potsdam, NY to William L. Nichols Sr and Eleanor Paro Nichols. He graduated from Potsdam High School in 1966. He attended Canton College, now Canton ATC. He enrolled in the Army Reserve in 1968. He retired after serving 25 years in the Army Reserve. In 1969, he started working for the Village of Potsdam as a mechanic, then at the Wastewater Treatment plant, and then with the Water and Parking Meter Department. Dad retired from the Village in 2003 after 35 of services to his community.

Bill also worked for Scanlon Home Care as an electrician/plumber/HVAC install and repairman. He started in 1985. Bill absolutely loved working for Everett and “the crew”. He retired in 2018 but continued going to the monthly lunches at The Ponderosa with the guys. It was something he would count the days down to.

He met the love of his life, Donna Lee Ashley, at a dance at the Potsdam Civic Center in 1965. After that dance, they were inseparable. They were married on June 20, 1970. It was the happiest day of his life. Dad passed 3 days shy of their 49th anniversary.

On October 2, 1971 they had a baby boy, William Joseph Nichols. Bill was the best Dad in the world. He provided everything that his family needed. He worked long hours but always found the time to coach Billy’s youth soccer, hockey, and baseball teams. He was the president of Potsdam Youth Soccer for a few years in the 1980s. He loved coaching all the kids.

In 1995 he had his first grandchild. Hannah Lyndsey Nichols was born. Followed by twins Connor and Cameron in 1997. And then by Brayden in 1999. His love for his grandkids was as deep as the ocean, all for different reasons. Hannah was his little princess but also his Walleye Queen. Connor was his soldier, nothing ever stops Connor from succeeding. He is a hard worker just like Dad was. Cameron was Dad’s joker. Cameron always made Dad laugh with his stories. Even though all the kids are very intelligent, Brayden was his little genius with a huge heart. Grandpa’s love for them will live on in our hearts forever.

Bill was predeceased by his mother and father. He is also predeceased by his furry child, the Boston Terrier, Oreo.

Bill leaves behind his loving wife Donna, his son Billy, his 4 amazing grandchildren Hannah, Connor, Cameron, and Brayden and their wonderful mother Suzette.

We will be having a celebration of Dad’s life at Sergi’s Banquet Hall on Saturday, June 22nd at 1-4. This will be very casual. Come happy and ready to tell the family stories about Bill that make you smile.

If you were not aware, Bill was afflicted with Parkinson’s Disease. It really limited his ability to live his life like he wanted to. If you are able, please make a tribute donation in Bill’s name to the Michael J Fox Foundation at

Although I did not know his dad, I’ve known his son “Billy” for several years. The obituary is absolutely beautiful and certainly a reflection of the love he had for life and his family. Keeping the whole family close to my heart during this difficult time. May he “Rest in Paradise...”
