MASSENA – Martha E. Converse, 94, a longtime resident of Stanton Road, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 25, 2019 at the Massena Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she had been a resident since 2012.
Martha was born August 12, 1924 in Knox, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Willis Alexander and Mildred (Hunter) Beck and attended schools in Bolivar, New York. On August 15, 1942, she married Arthur L. “Bill” Converse in Little Genesee, New York. He predeceased her on June 27, 1982.
Martha worked for many years at Massena Central Schools, retiring as a custodian in 1994 at the age of 70. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Clubs in Massena, Hogansburg, and Brasher. She was an active member of the Salvation Army and assisted them in many functions. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, arts and crafts, and going to auctions and garage sales.
Martha is survived by her children, Merle and Norma Jean Converse of Chase Mills, Beatrice and William Fawcett of Brockville, Ontario; and Bruce and Carolyn Converse of Massena; two stepsons, Howard and Nancy Converse of Franklinville and Leo Converse of Winter Haven, Florida; her grandchildren, Merle Jr. and Kelly Converse, Monica and Karl Tackitt, Derek and Evelyn Converse, Jason and Amanda Converse, Chris and Angelina Converse, William Jr. and Michelle Fawcett, and Cindy and Greg Sargent; her great grandchildren, Austen, Katherine, Ryan, Adriana, Evan, Owen, Sophie, and Nathan Converse, Melissa, William III, Kayla, and Ashton Fawcett, and Troy, Austen, Amanda, and Katrina Sargent; many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Marcella L. Converse in 1953 at age 8; three stepsons, Neal, Leland, and Lloyd Converse; her sisters, Grace Starr and Blanche Maxson; and her brothers, Lawrence and Merle Beck.
At her request, services will be held privately with burial in Little Genesee Cemetery.
