Obituary

PARISHVILLE – John R. Genaway, 71, of Sinclair Road, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 3, 2019 at his home with his loving family by his side.

John was born November 20, 1947 in Malone, the son of the late Willard and Nellie (Ryan) Genaway and was raised by his stepfather, James Nelson. He attended schools in Chateaugay. At age 18, he entered the US Army proudly serving his country for 2 years and was stationed for a time in Germany. On July 8, 2000, he married Beverly Phillips in North Lawrence with Rev. Lee Sweeney, officiating.

John worked in various departments at Alcoa for 28 years until his retirement. He also raised beef cattle in North Lawrence for many years. He took great pride in maintaining and mowing his lawn.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his children, Julie Genaway of Baldwinsville; John Genaway of Vermont; Joe Genaway of North Lawrence; David Phillips of Hannawa Falls; Dawn and Steve Ashlaw of Parishville; and Joshua Barrett of Massena; 18 grandchildren; his sister, Nellie Mae and Pat Brady of North Carolina; his brother, Willard Genaway of Japan; his aunt, Geraldine Ryan Perry of Malone; his mother-in-law, Joan Phillips of North Bangor; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Pita.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Rebecca Genaway.

Friends may call Sunday 4-7:00 PM at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, where funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Monday 11:00 AM with Rev. Lee Sweeney, officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley or Parishville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.

John is my first cousin and I will miss him. We were very close for years when I worked with him n the pot rooms at Alcoa. We went through some hard times together and it made our bond stronger. He will never be forgotten. His favorite saying was " It is a good life if we don't weaken." Your suffering is now over.
