Obituary

AKWESASNE – Larry J. Rourke, 71, of 1020 Drum Street Road, passed away Monday evening, July 13, 2020 at the University of Vermont Health Network at Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Larry was born on April 18, 1949 in Buffalo, the son of the late Barney J. and Viola E. (Cook) Rourke. He attended St. Regis Mohawk School before graduating from Salmon River Central School in 1966. While in high school, he was the baseball team that won the North Country Championship, which was later inducted into the Salmon River Hall of Fame. Following high school, he took a year of courses at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma before entering the US Army. He proudly served his country from 1967 until his honorable discharge in 1969.

He was a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits and Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479. Larry was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Cedarview Golf Course, as well as many other courses throughout the North Country. His love for baseball continued into his later years as a member of the American Legion Chiefs with the North Valley Baseball League, which won the 1982 championship and also with the American Legion Old Timers Softball Team. He also enjoyed bowling, watching wrestling, doing crossword puzzles, and cherished his beloved dog, Toby. Larry always had a quick wit and would continuously teasing his grandchildren.

Memories of Larry go back many years, to my 20s. He was my brother-in-law & we were the same age. I appreciated his sense of humor & the fact that he knew how to sew & did it well. RIP Brother. Hugs to Maggie, Arif, Buck, Joanna & Tassie. 💜Aunt Terry

Larry was a great baseball player. I recall going to watch him at games in high school. He actually took one of my BFFs to the prom, Bea Lively. He had a good sense of humor, once he was willing to share it😀. Then, he Married another of my Best Friends, his 1st wife was Elizabeth Balcom Cook! Pretty sure the proposal took place at Trippanys bar...the memories I have of Larry are not all shareable but I can say he was a well loved man by her and the kids, Joanna and Bucky. He was always ‘Daddy’. RIP Larry, the memories of you will last forever.
