MASSENA – Mary Kathryn Spagnolo, 78, a longtime resident of North Main Street, unexpectedly passed away Friday, August 21, 2020 at her home.

Mary Kathryn was born on July 21, 1942 in Massena, the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Elizabeth (Frisk) Spagnolo. She attended Massena Central Schools, graduating from Massena High School in 1960. She continued her education at the State University of New York at Potsdam, earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1964 and later achieving her Masters Degree in Library Science from the State University of New York at Geneseo on January 11, 1970.

After graduation, she worked for a year at the Ogdensburg City School District. In 1965, she started her career at Massena Central School as a School Library Specialist, retiring in June 1997. Mary Kathryn was a devout Catholic and active communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she enjoyed many years singing in the choir and being a member of the League of the Sacred Heart. In addition, she was a member of the NYS Library Association, NYS School Library Association, Massena Women’s College Club, Royal Neighbors of America, North Country Council of International Reading Association, and the New York State Teacher’s Association. She had a great love for reading and had a very generous heart and spirit, as she was regularly giving gifts to her many friends and family.

Mary Kathryn is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Jack Howard of Liverpool and Lake Worth, Florida; her nephews and their wives, Daniel and Laura Howard of Bellingham, Massachusetts and Brian and Jessica Howard of Saco, Maine; and her great nephews, Benjamin, Lucas, Griffin, and Landon; and a great niece, Addison.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena on Thursday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 2:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Massena. Due to the current health restrictions, all services will be attendance controlled, face coverings must be worn, and physical distancing be observed.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church Memorial Fund or Massena Public Library.

I will always have fond memories of Mrs. Spagnolo as our librarian. She always had the greatest patience with all her students, and loved to share knowledge with us.
She had a kind heart and a truly pure soul. May you rest in peace with great love.

Mary was a beloved colleague and friend. I worked with her for many many years and can testify to the warmth and generosity of her spirit. I was blessed to count her as friend. Her light will be missed but not forgotten by the many students, colleagues, and friends who were lucky enough to know her.

Although our families have lost touch over the years, I remember Mary Kay so well from my childhood. We loved those trips to Massena!
