AKWESASNE – Darryl “Kermit” Lazare, 57, of 72 First Street, Kana:takon, unexpectedly passed away early Sunday morning, June 13, 2021 at the Cornwall Community Hospital.

Darryl was born on February 4, 1964 in Cornwall, Ontario. Son of the late Thomas and Bessie (Day) Lazare, he attended school in Kana:takon and General Vanier. At the age of 15, Darryl started work as an ironworker, beginning with jobs in Seabrook, New Hampshire and Dallas, Texas. He was a proud member of Philadelphia Local #401, working with Cornell Crane and Steel in Philadelphia, American Bridge and Rice Mohawk in New York City. He worked on several skyscrapers across the Northeast, most notably Goldman Sachs, in New Jersey, working from basement to topping out. At the time, it was the tallest building in the state of New Jersey.

As owner and operator of Lazare Tree Service for the past 11 years, Darryl enjoyed working in the community with his sons. Darryl proudly served as Kana:takon District Chief for the past six years. He was looking forward to the upcoming election and continuing his service to Akwesasne. He had a great love for ironworking, golfing, traveling, and was an avid fan of both the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia Eagles. Darryl also had a great gift for carpentry and woodworking.

Darryl is survived by his loving wife, Sherril. They were married in Akwesasne on September 8, 2001. He is also survived by his adoring children, Colin Lazare (Stephanie), Ashton Lazare (Devin), Darryl Jr., Lauren, and Lia Lazare; his grandchildren, Kendall, Keylin, Kayde, Kaya, and Kyevin; his sister, Vicky Thompson (Ron); many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved cat, Pepper and dog, Rocco.

Darryl is also survived by his wife’s family; grandmother, Beulah Terrance; mother and father-in-law, Roger and Laura Thomas; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Christopher and Michelle Lazare, Sharlee Thomas, and Shavon Thomas (Jordan).

In addition to his parents Thomas and Bessie, he was predeceased by a son, Devin Burns, his brother, Harold Jacobs; his sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Kevin Ivany.

Friends may call at his home, 72 First Street, Kana:takon beginning 12:00 NOON on Wednesday until 2:00 PM Friday when funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM.
